December 2009
Hello Arbors,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
There have been a few developments over the past month that I would like all of you to know about.
When I wrote last month's update, Clayton Chandler, the city manager, had approved the sidewalks and work was to start in the immediate future. He had communicated that the job had come in at $47,000 and since that was under $50,000 he did not need to get approval from council. He stated that he would get three bids, pick the best one and get back with us within 10 days. When we didn't hear from him, our attorney attempted to reach him by phone leaving several messages that were not returned. He did call us back after we sent a letter only to tell us that we were not getting sidewalks. He took the project to council where it got voted down. I don't know why he took it to council, and can't get an answer to that question. All we are being told is that council is not approving sidewalks for any neighborhood in Mansfield, period. The way I see this situation we really only have one realistic option. We (all of us) need to contact our council members and let them know how important this is to us. Since we have an at-large council, we need to contact every member. The only way we will get anywhere is if they know how important this is to us.
The landscape covenant amendment was not approved. There were approximately 90 "yes" votes, which is not sufficient to pass the changes.
We have received three bids for the two landscaping projects. The board will meet and discuss them this month. I will be getting back to you on what we decide.
I will let you know in next month's update the time and place for our annual meeting to be held in February. This is a great time to be thinking about whether or not you would like to volunteer in the neighborhood. Please let me know if there are any positions you would be interested in.
Please see below for the contact information (as listed on the city's website) for all council members.
I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday. Please be careful putting up those lights!

Timely Tip for December Gardeners
from Calloway’s Nursery
Winterizing Your Landscape
Living in Texas, you never know what to expect from Mother Nature. Being prepared for our extreme weather is the best solution!
One simple thing you can do for your landscape plants is to provide a 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch. Mulching is beneficial year round but during the colder periods it provides a layer of insulation for the roots.
Secondly, water your landscape well before a cold spell. A drought stressed plant is more susceptible to freeze damage.
Thirdly, for more tender plants, purchase frost cloth for extra protection. Remember that many frost tender plants can be damaged even when the temperatures are in the high 30’s. Frost cloth is a fabric which adds 3 to 4 degrees of warmth. Cover the plant completely allowing the edges to come all the way to the ground. That way, we are utilizing the heat which radiates from the ground.
Become a member of the Calloway’s Garden Club and you will receive email notices prior to any weather crisis. Visit www.mytexasgarden.com to join.
This is also a great time to start planning changes or additions to your landscape. Bring a sketch or photo and let our Calloway’s Texas Certified Nursery Professionals assist you!
